Freedom Remote Documentation

Description:

Freedom Remote is for when your Freedom 2000 is on a different computer than the WWW server where your FreedomApplet is returned from. A java applet can only communicate back to the server it was retrieved from. For this reason the Freedom Remote solution involves using the mill-shaf.com computer as a proxy server for the FreedomApplets to communicate with. The server on mill-shaf.com then relays the communications back to your FreedomRemote program.

The FreedomApplet is returned within a small pop window or frame that you can place on the page where your primary web site is. The pop up window can be made to display automatically or by having a button or link that says "click here to control webcam". (See examples)

The FreedomApplet has the same functionality in the Freedom Remote and Freedom Direct solutions. Users are still shown how much time they have control of or are waiting to control the mount. Uses are also are able to adjust speed and movement size of the mount as well.

The Freedom Remote software also offers the administrator an interface to allow them to change various settings on the FreedomMount. These settings include all of those except one that are available under the Freedom Direct software including the scheduler, preset positions, default position, and continuous pan.

The one setting that can not be set via the Freedom Remote software is the default control time for the applet. To change this setting as well as set the IP address of the machine that the Freedom Mount is located on administrators are given a username and password to login to a page on the proxy server mill-shaf.com to be able to set this information.

Requirements: To run the Freedom Remote software you need to have Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0 (Linux/Unix versions are currently being developed). Additionally, the Freedom Remote software requires that if you are behind a firewall the appropriate ports need to be opened.

Quick Setup:

1. Download the file FreedomRemote.zip from the download area.
2. Unzip the file FreedomRemote.zip and run setup.
3. Once setup has finished you find a link to Freedom Direct 2000 under "Start -> Programs" start Freedom Remote 2000
4 If your Freedom Mount is not already connected to your computer and plugged in go ahead and do so.
5. Under settings select the correct Parallel Port Address and Operating System and click save.
6. If you have changed the Operating System type please exit and restart the Freedom Remote 2000 program (only required when OS changed).
7. To test the Freedom Mount click on "Orient Mount". Your mount should began to both pan and tilt. The mount will try to pan itself 360 degrees and tilt itself 180 degrees and then rotate itself back to the default position. (Note: the mount will make noise as hits the physical stops--this is to be expected and doesn't damage the mount).
8. Send an email to info@mill-shaf.com to request that a userid/password be created for you on the mill-shaf.com FreedomRemote proxy server. You will then be sent an email containing the necessary information to complete the last step of setup. (All requests processed within 24 hours).

Once you receive your username/password do the following steps:

1) Orient the Mount this will cause the mount to move to the extreme position and then back to its default position. This will cause some noise but don't worry it doesn't hurt the mount.
2) Once you have oriented the mount go to Settings -> IP Settings
3) You will see a new window popup. Change the FreedomMountID to your mountid number and enter your username and password in. Also you need to let the proxy server know what your IP address is. If you are on a dialup line this can change each time you disconnect so you need to either select the IP address that the program detected you using or overide it and type in the IP address. (DSL and cable modem are much nicer -- also allow you to run FreedomDirect which is easier).
4) Click on Send IP Info and wait about ten seconds. Only click once. Your info is being sent and updated.
5) You should see a screen that says "Success". Close this window and then the IP Settings window. It takes about 1 minute for your settings you submitted to ripple through the programs on the proxy server.
6) Once you have done this your URL that allows anyone to control your camera is:
http://mill-shaf.com/proxy/freedomapplet.asp?mountid=yourmountnumber
